IT’S SPRING!

Spring has finally arrived, and I couldn’t be happier. Around my house, the almond and cherry blossoms are transforming the dull winter landscape. There’s nothing quite like the colors and beauty of spring to inspire my drawings.

Drawing outside is a joy during this time. It’s not too cold or too hot, and the change in scenery inspires me a lot. It’s during this time that I think I should use colors in my sketches because I feel like I fall short in capturing the beauty and variety of spring colors. However, when it’s time to go out and draw, I end up bringing my only calibrated fine liners and leaving my watercolors at home.

This year, I have the idea of documenting the different wildflowers that I come across on my walks, the ones that grow in the corners of the sidewalk. I’ve seen white, violet, and yellow ones, and I have no idea what their names are yet, but we’ll surely find out together once I start posting the illustrations on my Instagram account.

I’m thinking of making some botanical prints like the ones I made during the pandemic with these illustrations. The idea will be to document them in black and white in my notebook, then arrange the different illustrations on the iPad and digitally apply color to them.

During the spring of 2020, I dedicated myself to drawing the trees and fruits I had nearby, then I experimented with color and gave them a retro feel that reminded me of the botanical illustrations from the 18th century expeditions.

When Domestika proposed a second collaboration with me, it was those illustrations that inspired me to create my course on botanical illustration. As it was the second course I did with the platform, I was more relaxed when we recorded it and enjoyed the process much more. Perhaps that’s why I have a special affection for it, and it’s my favorite course. I’ll leave the link for you to check it out, in the course we create the botanical illustration of a fig tree because we did it in October, and the figs were in full season. Let me know what you think of it.

UPCOMING EVENTS

On April 6th, I will be doing a live online workshop for about 2 hours, where we will draw a chapel located inside the Alhambra of Granada. It’s a way to warm up for the trip I’m planning to Granada in October. In the workshop, we’ll start from scratch with sketching and drawing in pencil from a reference, then we’ll move on to ink and finally add color information with watercolors and colored pencils. I will explain step by step how I do it and try to answer any questions that come up. The idea is to have a good time while I tell you about my usual drawing process. If you like drawing and want to improve the way you observe and capture things in your notebook, don’t miss it.

On the other hand, registrations for the vacation workshop in October will close in May. If you want to come with me to Granada for 5 days to draw and enjoy food, music, and a wonderful city, reserve your spot before May. I’ll also leave the link with all the travel information.

REQUEST

Whether it’s spring where you live or not, I suggest you accompany me by drawing the species you have nearby. Regardless of the technique you use, don’t forget to tag me when you post them. I really like to understand different realities through the drawings I see, and if they’re botanical, even better.

If you have any questions or topics you’d like me to cover, feel free to reply to this email. I’m always happy to chat.

cheers
David Morales H.
